Background

Over the past years, there has been a multiplication of security threats caused by the usage of small UAVs. The autonomous aspect of the UAVs and their payload are suitable for hostile activities, resulting in a growth in research and development of counter-UAV (C-UAV) technologies and systems. This increasing effort is observable in the multiple NATO Research Task Group addressing specific domains related to C-UAV such as SET-260: Assessment of EO/IR Technologies for Detection of Small UAVs in an Urban Environment, SET-307 Advanced radar techniques for robust situation awareness and threat assessment considering Class I UAS in complex environments, MSG-SET-183. Drone Detectability: modeling the relevant signature, SCI-301: Defeat of Low Slow and Small (LSS) Air Threats, SCI-294: Demonstration and Research of Effects of RF Directed Energy Weapons on Electronically Controlled Vehicles, Vessels and UAVs. Each of the RTGs are focusing on specific aspects of the global C-UAV challenge.

Objectives

The objective of this RTG aims at bringing together experts in EO/IR detection among the NATO community to share knowledge and data on different EO/IR technologies for the detection of mini and micro-UAVs in a complex environment. This will be achieved by conducting a joint field trial with different sensor systems including others than EO/IR and UAVs where measurements of UAV and background signatures will be taken. This leads to testing of different technologies for detections systems / methods in a joint trial and integration with different systems, like RADAR queuing a EO systems. The signatures collected simultaneously among the differing Nations will be shared to develop and test detection/tracking algorithms where the results can be further shared to realize the benefits and lessons learned to provide future exploitation of UAV detection/tracking. The data collected will be shared with Data and Sharing Hub (DASH), an online NATO-only digital repository to support algorithm development and researchers in the community.

Topics

The RTG will create a unique possibility of deploying different EO/IR technologies in a joint trial/trials to collect signature data during the same scenarios and in the same conditions. The technologies to be deployed during the trial will include various EO systems, but is not limited to: • Active imagery in the SWIR NIR and VIS bands; • Scanning LIDAR; • Passive, Multispectral or Wide band imagery in the LWIR, MWIR, SWIR, NIR and VIS bands. • Active radar • Passive radar • Acoustics • RF detection and localization • Other systems Specific topics of this RTG are: • Advanced sensing technologies for UAV Detection • Sensor fusion techniques for UAV Detection Systems • Hybrid UAV Detection Systems • Algorithms for detection of UAVs • Metrics for countering UAVs • Detection of drone swarms • UAV detection requirements
